Connecting to Collections: A Call to Action
The video below was created by The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in conjunction with Heritage Preservation to raise public awareness of the importance of caring for our national heritage and to encourage the public to support their local museums, libraries, and archives.
The collections in our libraries, museums, archives, historic houses, and gardens enlighten, inform, and inspire us all and help to give our communities a sense of place and identity. The IMLS has launched a national initiative to make the public aware of the importance of caring for these priceless pieces of our past and to underscore the fact that they are essential to the American story. A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America’s Collections, a 2005 study cosponsored by Heritage Preservation and IMLS, found that our nation's collections of objects, documents, and digital materials are in trouble and in need of protective action:
- 190 million objects held by archives, historical societies, libraries, museums, and scientific organizations in the US are in need of conservation treatment.
- 65% of collecting institutions have experienced damage to collections due to improper storage.
- 80% of collecting institutions do not have an emergency plan that includes collections, with staff trained to carry it out.
- 40% of institutions have no funds allocated in their annual budgets for preservation or conservation.
